This is something I can support. For the record they were in the US legally but he gave the 1 year to learn English and get a job or go to Jail for 2 years. I saw a news program on this case. A defense attorney in the area who knows the Judge said that if the defendants is at least tiring and show they worked towards the goal he will likely not put them in jail. However is they don't try they will end up in jail. This judge is one of the tougher judges in the area. So even if they are not 100% prefect in English but have tried and can show that to the Judge the will likely not go to jail. I applaud this type of reform. If they want to straighten out there lives this is the way. If they comply they wont have to see the inside of a jail cell if they don't then maybe sending them to jail for a 2 years will make them see the errors of there ways.

If they don’t comply with the judge’s orders they go back in the can for two years.

Now, if the judge had just limited the conditions of their parole to “get educated” and “get a job” there wouldn’t be any controversy. Those are things that will help them re-integrate with society and lead prosperous lives. But the “learn English” party is setting people off, though I can’t for the life of me figure out why. After all, in a society where English is by far the dominant language, it is one heck of a lot easier to get a job and become prosperous if you’re speaking the same language as everyone else.
